Six Assurances

The Six Assurances are a set of policies from the United States that limit how much control the U.S. former administration had over the peaceful process in Vietnam’s negotiations and elections, ensuring South Vietnam’s independence and decision-making. They include commitments to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty, oppose any unilateral changes to the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, and oppose any efforts to impose reunification through force or coercion. Essentially, these assurances were meant to support Vietnam’s self-determination and prevent the U.S. from withdrawing support or making decisions that could undermine the South Vietnamese government.
