SIRT (Selective Internal Radiation Therapy)

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat certain liver cancers. Doctors inject tiny radioactive beads into the liver’s blood vessels that supply the tumor. These beads lodge in the cancer’s small blood vessels, delivering targeted radiation directly to the tumor while sparing most of the healthy liver tissue. This localized approach helps shrink or control the cancer, often reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. SIRT is usually an option for patients who aren’t candidates for surgery and is performed in a hospital setting, providing a targeted, effective treatment with fewer side effects compared to traditional radiation.
