Sir Charles Sherrington

Sir Charles Sherrington was a renowned British neuroscientist who greatly advanced our understanding of how the nervous system works. He studied how the brain and spinal cord control movement and process information by examining the connections between nerve cells (neurons). His key discovery was the concept of synapses, the tiny gaps where neurons communicate. Sherrington also explained reflexes and muscle coordination, showing how the nervous system integrates signals to produce smooth, coordinated actions. His work laid the foundation for modern neuroscience and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1932.
