Simpson Treaty
The Simpson Treaty was an agreement made in 1923 between the British government and the Kingdom of Sikkim. It aimed to preserve Sikkim's independence while giving the British certain controls, such as oversight of foreign relations and military matters. The treaty recognized Sikkim as a protectorate, meaning it remained a separate, semi-autonomous state but relied on Britain for defense and diplomatic affairs. This arrangement allowed Sikkim to maintain its local authority while benefitting from British protection, and it laid the groundwork for Sikkim's future political status until it became part of India in 1975.
