Silver sulfide
Silver sulfide is a chemical compound composed of silver and sulfur. It typically forms when silver objects, such as jewelry or electronics, are exposed to sulfur-containing substances, causing tarnishing or darkening. This compound appears as a black or dark brown layer on the surface. Silver sulfide is insoluble in water and is often responsible for the tarnished look of silver items over time. It’s used intentionally in some photographic and electronic applications, but we usually seek to prevent its formation to maintain the appearance and functionality of silver objects.
