silk production techniques
Silk production begins with silkworms, which are caterpillars that spin cocoons of fine, continuous fiber to protect themselves during transformation. Farmers raise silkworms on mulberry leaves until they are ready to spin, then carefully harvest the cocoons. The cocoons are boiled gently to soften the sericin glue holding the fibers together, allowing the long, smooth threads to be unwound. These threads are then cleaned, twisted, and woven into silk fabric. The process requires precise handling to preserve the silk’s strength and luster, resulting in the luxurious fabric widely used in textiles and fashion.
