Silapathikaram is an ancient Tamil epic from India, written around the 2nd century CE, that narrates the tragic story of Kannagi, a proud and devoted woman. After her husband Kovalan is accused of theft and executed unjustly, Kannagi proves his innocence and, filled with righteous anger, confronts the king, leading to the destruction of the city of Madurai by fire.
