SIL (squamous intraepithelial lesion)

A squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) is a term used to describe abnormal changes in the cells on the surface of the cervix, often detected through a Pap smear. These changes can range from mild to more severe and are typically caused by infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). SIL is categorized as low-grade (LSIL), indicating mild abnormalities that often resolve on their own, or high-grade (HSIL), which involves more significant changes that could potentially develop into cervical cancer if left untreated. Monitoring and sometimes treatment can help prevent progression to more serious disease.
