Siege warfare history
Siege warfare is a method of combat where an attacking force surrounds a fortified location to capture it, cutting off supplies and reinforcements. Historically, sieges date back to ancient times, with notable examples like the Siege of Troy and the Roman sieges of various cities. Techniques evolved from using simple battering rams and catapults to more complex strategies like undermining walls and employing cannons. The goal was often to force a surrender through starvation or psychological pressure. The advent of gunpowder and modern artillery eventually transformed siege tactics, leading to fewer prolonged sieges in modern warfare as armies became more mobile.
