Siege of Limerick

The Siege of Limerick (1649–1651) was a key conflict during Ireland’s Wars of the Rebellion. Royalist and Irish Catholic forces defended Limerick against Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian troops aiming to control Ireland. After intense fighting, Cromwell’s army besieged the city, which was a strategic stronghold. The defenders eventually surrendered in 1651, marking a decisive step in Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland. The event significantly impacted Irish history, intensifying divisions and affecting the country’s subsequent political and religious landscape.
