Siege of Fort Washington
The Siege of Fort Washington occurred during the American Revolutionary War on November 16, 1776. British forces attacked and overwhelmed the American-held fort on Manhattan Island. Despite some resistance, the Americans were outnumbered and lacking sufficient supplies. Facing inevitable defeat, General William Heath surrendered the fort and its troops to the British. The loss was significant because it gave Britain control of a strategic position in New York City, and many American soldiers were taken as prisoners. This event highlighted the difficulties faced by the Continental Army early in the war.
