Siege of Cawnpore
The Siege of Cawnpore was a key event during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when Indian soldiers and civilians rebelled against British rule. British forces and residents at Cawnpore (now Kanpur) were surrounded by Indian rebels, leading to a prolonged struggle. After several weeks, British defenders surrendered. Tragically, many were killed in what became known as the Cawnpore Massacre—when some prisoners were attacked during an uprising. The event heightened tensions, leading the British to retaliate fiercely, and it remains a significant episode illustrating the complexities and brutalities of colonial resistance.
