Siege of Atlanta
The Siege of Atlanta (July 22 – September 2, 1864) was a crucial Civil War battle where Union forces, led by General Sherman, surrounded and bombarded the Confederate-held city of Atlanta. The goal was to cut off supplies and weaken Confederate defenses, forcing the Confederates to retreat. After weeks of siege, Confederate forces evacuated, and Atlanta fell into Union hands, boosting Northern morale and contributing to Lincoln’s reelection. The victory also paved the way for Sherman’s famous "March to the Sea," helping expedite the end of the Civil War.
