Side Population assay

The Side Population (SP) assay is a laboratory technique used to identify certain stem-like cells within a mixed cell sample. It relies on the ability of these cells to efficiently pump out specific dyes, causing them to appear less stained when viewed under a microscope or a flow cytometer. By analyzing how cells exclude the dye, researchers can distinguish the SP cells, which are thought to have high regenerative potential and are often linked to cancer stem cells. This method helps in studying cell populations involved in tissue repair or tumor growth.
