Siberian Traps
The Siberian Traps are a massive region of volcanic rock in northeastern Russia, formed from extensive volcanic eruptions around 252 million years ago. These eruptions released enormous amounts of lava, gases, and ash, contributing to one of Earth’s most severe extinction events, the Permian-Triassic extinction. The vast outpouring of magma covered around 2 million square kilometers, significantly altering the planet's climate, atmosphere, and ecosystems. The Siberian Traps are an example of how large-scale volcanic activity can impact global life, playing a key role in Earth’s geological and biological history.
