Shushtar Hydraulic System
The Shushtar Hydraulic System, in Iran, is an ancient irrigation network dating back over 1,500 years. It consists of rivers, dams, bridges, aqueducts, and water mills designed to divert water from rivers to irrigate farms and supply the city. The system ingeniously channels water through underground tunnels and channels, controlling flow with weirs and turbines. This engineering marvel not only enabled efficient water management in a desert region but also supported agriculture and urban life, demonstrating sophisticated hydraulic technology of its time and making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
