Shia-Sunni Relations

Shia and Sunni are the two main branches of Islam, sharing core beliefs but differing in historical and theological practices. The split originated over a dispute about who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad as leader, with Sunnis favoring elected leaders and Shias supporting the Prophet’s family. Over time, cultural, political, and doctrinal differences developed, sometimes leading to tension and conflict. However, most Muslims from both branches coexist peacefully, sharing core religious values. Understanding these differences helps in recognizing the diverse expressions of Islam and promotes respect among communities.
