Shi'a and Sunni
Shi’a and Sunni are the two main branches of Islam, differing primarily over who should have succeeded the Prophet Muhammad after his death. Sunnis believe leadership should be chosen by consensus and recognize the first four caliphs as rightful successors. Shi’a believe leadership should stay within Muhammad’s family, especially through his cousin and son-in-law, Ali. These differences have led to distinct religious practices, beliefs, and cultural traditions over centuries. Despite disagreements, both groups share core Islamic principles, such as worshiping Allah and following the Quran.
