Sherrington's Law states that when a muscle contracts, the opposing muscle in the same muscle pair simultaneously relaxes. This coordination ensures smooth and controlled movement. For example, when you bend your elbow to lift an object, your biceps contract while the triceps automatically relax to allow the movement. This reflex mechanism is fundamental for efficient muscle function, preventing opposing muscles from working against each other and allowing for coordinated motor activity. It highlights the reciprocal nature of muscle actions during movement, which is essential for posture, movement, and stability.
