shelf break zone
The shelf break zone is the point where the continental shelf, which is the relatively shallow area near land, suddenly drops off into the much deeper continental slope. It marks the transition between these two zones and is typically characterized by a steep slope. This area is important for marine navigation, ecological diversity, and underwater exploration, as it often has unique habitats and is a key area for resource exploration, such as oil and gas. The shelf break usually occurs at depths of about 120 to 200 meters (roughly 390 to 650 feet).
