Sharm El Sheikh Peace Agreement (1979)
The Sharm El Sheikh Peace Agreement of 1979 was a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, aimed at ending their long-standing conflict. Signed in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh, the treaty recognized Israel as a sovereign state and returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. In exchange, Egypt became the first Arab country to officially establish diplomatic relations with Israel. This agreement helped stabilize the region, promoted peace in the Middle East, and set a precedent for future negotiations. It was facilitated by the United States and marked a significant step toward conflict resolution between the two nations.
