Setsubun
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese festival held annually on February 3rd or 4th, marking the transition of seasons, especially the arrival of spring. The main customs involve **mamemaki**, where people throw roasted soybeans either outside their homes or at family members dressed as a devil (oni) to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Participants often shout “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” meaning “Demons out! Good fortune in!” Setsubun blends seasonal change awareness with the desire for health, happiness, and prosperity, making it an important cultural and spiritual observance in Japan.
