Serum sickness

Serum sickness is an allergic reaction that occurs after receiving certain medications or treatments, especially those involving animal proteins, like antivenoms or monoclonal antibodies. It happens when the immune system mistakenly identifies these substances as foreign invaders and mounts an attack against them. Symptoms can include fever, rash, joint pain, and swelling. While generally not life-threatening, serum sickness can be uncomfortable and usually resolves on its own within weeks. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, and in some cases, corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation.
