Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are a class of antidepressant medications that help improve mood by increasing levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating emotions. Normally, after serotonin is released in the brain, it’s reabsorbed by nerve cells. SSRIs block this reabsorption, allowing more serotonin to stay available in the brain. This enhanced serotonin activity can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. SSRIs are commonly prescribed due to their effectiveness and generally favorable side effect profile, making them a widely used treatment option for mood disorders.
