serotonin reuptake inhibitors

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors are medications commonly used to treat depression and anxiety. They work by increasing levels of serotonin, a chemical in the brain that influences mood, emotion, and sleep. Normally, after serotonin is released into the brain synapses to signal between nerve cells, it is reabsorbed by the releasing neuron. Reuptake inhibitors block this reabsorption, allowing more serotonin to stay active in the synapse longer. This helps improve communication between brain cells, which can enhance mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Examples include fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft).
