Serialism

Serialism is a compositional technique in modern music where composers organize all aspects of a piece—such as pitch, rhythm, and dynamics—using a predetermined series or pattern. Instead of relying on traditional harmony or melodies, the composer systematically applies this series to create structure and coherence. This approach often results in music that sounds more abstract or experimental, emphasizing consistency and structure over familiar melodies. Developed in the early 20th century by composers like Arnold Schoenberg, serialism aims for a high level of control and complexity through the use of ordered sequences.
