SERCA1
SERCA1 (Sarcoplasmic/Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium ATPase 1) is a specialized protein found mainly in fast-twitch muscle fibers. Its main role is to pump calcium ions from the muscle cell's cytoplasm back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a storage site inside the muscle. This process helps muscles relax after contracting and prepares them for the next movement. By controlling calcium levels, SERCA1 ensures proper muscle function, strength, and responsiveness. It operates using energy from ATP, making it essential for rapid, repeated muscle contractions typical of quick, powerful movements.
