Sequoyah

Sequoyah was a Cherokee man who created the Cherokee syllabary, a written alphabet that allowed the Cherokee Nation to read and write in their own language. In the early 19th century, he developed this system to help preserve their culture and improve communication. The syllabary made literacy easier for Cherokee people and helped them record their stories, history, and government. Sequoyah's innovation was remarkable because he invented an entirely new writing system without prior formal education in linguistics or mathematics, significantly empowering the Cherokee Nation’s cultural identity and resilience.
