Senegalese independence
Senegal gained independence from French colonial rule on April 4, 1960. This marked the end of over 300 years of European control, during which the Senegalese people faced political and economic exploitation. The independence movement was fueled by a growing national consciousness, political activism, and a desire for self-determination. Léopold Sédar Senghor became the first president, leading efforts to establish a national identity and promote cultural pride. Senegal's independence is celebrated annually and is seen as a significant moment in African history, inspiring other nations to pursue freedom from colonial powers.
