Semiology

Semiology, also known as semiotics, is the study of signs and symbols and how they communicate meaning. It examines how signs—such as words, images, sounds, or gestures—convey messages and influence our understanding of the world. For example, a red traffic light is a sign indicating to stop. Semiology looks at how these signs function within culture and context, helping us interpret meaning beyond just the literal. It's used across various fields like linguistics, art, and media to analyze how meaning is created and shared through different signs and symbols.
