Semele

Semele is a figure from Greek mythology, known as a mortal woman and the daughter of Cadmus. She is most famous for her relationship with Zeus, the king of gods. Zeus loved Semele and visited her in human form, but Hera, jealous of his affair, tricked Semele into asking Zeus to reveal his divine nature. When he did, his blazing divine form incinerated her. However, her pregnancy with Zeus's child, Dionysus (the god of wine and theater), led to her divine rebirth and to Dionysus's own importance in Greek myth. Semele's story explores themes of mortality, divine power, and tragedy.
