Sediment sampling methods

Sediment sampling involves collecting soil or particle samples from the bottom of water bodies like lakes, rivers, or oceans to assess their composition, contaminants, or health. Methods include using devices such as push cores, which are tubes pushed into the sediment to retrieve a column of material; grab samplers, which snag surface sediments; and dredges, which scoop larger amounts from the bottom. These techniques ensure that scientists obtain representative samples for analysis of pollutants, nutrients, or biological properties, helping to monitor environmental conditions and inform water management decisions.
