Secretory Component

The Secretory Component (SC) is a part of the immune system that helps protect mucous membranes, like those in the nose, throat, and intestines. It is produced by immune cells and combines with antibodies called IgA to form secretory IgA. This complex is then transported across the lining of mucous membranes, where it helps prevent pathogens such as bacteria and viruses from attaching and causing infections. Essentially, the SC acts as a safeguard, ensuring immune defenses are present where the body encounters external environments, providing targeted protection at these vulnerable sites.
