β-secretase

β-secretase is an enzyme involved in the process of breaking down certain proteins in the brain. Specifically, it cuts a precursor protein called amyloid precursor protein (APP), which, when processed further, can produce amyloid beta peptides. These peptides can accumulate and form plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. By cleaving APP at a particular site, β-secretase initiates this pathway.
