Sebastianism (theological concept)
Sebastianism is a Portuguese and Brazilian belief rooted in the legend of King Sebastian I of Portugal, who disappeared in 1578 during a military expedition in Morocco. Followers believed that Sebastian would return someday to restore Portugal’s greatness and unite the nation. The idea symbolizes hope, resilience, and the idea of a future revival during times of crisis or decline. Though based on historical mystery, Sebastianism became a cultural and spiritual motif, reflecting collective longing for renewal and the belief that a savior or leader would come again to bring better days.
