Seam allowances
Seam allowances are the extra fabric added around the edges of fabric pieces when sewing garments. They provide space for sewing the pieces together securely without damaging the main fabric, and also allow for adjustments if needed, such as taking in or letting out the fit later. Typically, seam allowances range from about 1/4 inch to 1 inch, depending on the project. They are not usually visible once the garment is finished and help ensure durability and proper fit. Think of seam allowances as the built-in margin that makes sewing more flexible and the finished product more reliable.
