Scottish Covenant
The Scottish Covenant was a campaign in the 1940s and 1950s in which thousands of Scots signed petitions advocating for greater self-governance, or home rule, for Scotland. Organized mainly by the Scottish Covenant Association, it was a peaceful movement emphasizing the desire for political autonomy within the United Kingdom. The goal was to have Scotland manage its own domestic affairs, including education, health, and lawmaking, while remaining part of the UK. Although the Covenant itself didn’t directly achieve these aims, it played a significant role in fostering national identity and setting the stage for later movements towards Scottish devolution.
