scleral buckle
A scleral buckle is a surgical procedure used to treat retinal detachment, a serious condition where the retina separates from the back of the eye. During the operation, a flexible silicone band (the "buckle") is placed around the eye's outer surface (sclera) to gently push the eye wall inward. This reduces the traction causing the detachment and helps the retina reattach to the eye tissue. The procedure often includes additional steps like laser treatment or cryotherapy to secure the retina. Scleral buckling is effective in restoring vision and preventing further damage when performed promptly.
