Schuschnigg's Movement
Schuschnigg's Movement refers to the political efforts led by Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg in the mid-1930s to maintain Austria's independence and neutrality amid rising Nazi influence in Germany. He aimed to strengthen Austria’s sovereignty by resisting Nazi pressure, promoting Austrian nationalism, and seeking international support for Austria’s independence. Despite these efforts, Austria faced increasing internal and external challenges, culminating in Germany's annexation (Anschluss) in 1938. Essentially, Schuschnigg's movement was Austria's attempt to preserve its sovereignty and cultural identity during a time of growing foreign threat.
