Schmidt refers to the scientific principle discovered by Johannes Schmidt, which explains how oxygen is supplied to aquatic animals like fish through a process called counter-current exchange. In this process, water flows in one direction over the gills, while blood flows in the opposite direction within the gill vessels. This setup allows oxygen from the water to efficiently transfer into the blood, maximizing oxygen uptake even when water contains low oxygen levels.
