Saptak

Saptak is a fundamental concept in Indian classical music, referring to the octave or the full spectrum of musical notes. It consists of seven main notes—Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni—that form the basis for melodies and scales. These notes are similar to the do-re-mi sequence in Western music but are organized within an octave range that repeats at higher or lower pitches. The saptak helps musicians understand pitch relationships, scale construction, and the progression of melodies, serving as a foundational framework for improvisation and composition in Indian music traditions.
