Sanskritization
Sanskritization is a social process in India where lower caste or marginalized groups adopt practices, rituals, and cultural elements associated with higher castes, particularly Brahmins, to improve their social status. This often involves adopting Sanskrit language, religious customs, and symbols of the dominant castes. The process is driven by a desire for social acceptance, respect, and upward mobility within the caste hierarchy. While it can help individuals gain recognition, it also raises concerns about cultural assimilation and the persistence of social inequalities. Essentially, Sanskritization is a way for groups to elevate their social standing by aligning with the cultural norms of the highest castes.
