San Martín’s campaigns were a series of military efforts led by José de San Martín to free South America from Spanish rule. Starting in 1817, he crossed the Andes Mountains to surprise Spanish forces in Chile, then moved into Peru. His goal was to establish independence and create stable governments. San Martín coordinated with other independence leaders and eventually led the decisive battles that ended Spanish control in the region.
