San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez
San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez was a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court case that addressed whether funding disparities among Texas public schools violated the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. Texas funded schools mainly through local property taxes, so wealthier districts had more money than poorer ones. The Court ruled that education is not a fundamental right explicitly protected by the Constitution, and disparities in school funding did not automatically violate equal protection. Essentially, the case upheld states' authority to structure their own school funding systems, even if it meant some students received less resources.
