Samnium

Samnium, also known as Samnium or Samn territory, was an ancient region in Italy inhabited by the Samnites, a group of fiercely independent tribes. Located in the mountainous central part of Italy, it played a significant role during the Roman Republic's expansion, often resisting Roman control through military conflict. The region is characterized by rugged terrain, dense forests, and hilltop settlements. Today, Samnium roughly corresponds to parts of modern southern Italy, primarily in the Abruzzo, Molise, and Campania regions. Its history reflects a blend of indigenous culture and the broader Roman narrative of conquest and integration.
