Salvage archaeology

Salvage archaeology involves quickly excavating and studying historical or prehistoric artifacts and sites that are threatened by development, construction, or natural events. When construction or other activities risk destroying archaeological remains, archaeologists intervene to recover valuable information before destruction occurs. This work aims to document and preserve cultural heritage and understanding of the past in cases where immediate action is necessary. Essentially, salvage archaeology is a rapid and focused effort to rescue artifacts and data from sites at risk, ensuring they are recorded scientifically before they are lost forever.
