Salt tax

Salt tax is a government-imposed levy on the sale or production of salt. Historically, it was used as a source of revenue and sometimes to control salt consumption or distribution. People had to pay a certain amount to buy salt, which was an essential item for food preservation and flavor. In many cases, such taxes affected everyday life and could lead to protests if seen as unfair, as salt was a basic necessity. An example is the Salt March in India (1930), where Indians protested against British salt taxes, symbolizing broader resistance to colonial rule.
