Salerno Landings

The Salerno Landings, also known as the invasion of Italy in September 1943, were Allied military operations during World War II aimed at opening a new front in Europe. British and American forces landed on the beaches of Salerno, near Naples, in southern Italy. The goal was to break through German defenses, weaken Italy’s resistance, and divert German resources from other fronts. This operation marked the start of the Italian Campaign, leading to the eventual liberation of Italy from Axis control. Despite tough fighting and stiff German resistance, the landings were ultimately successful, setting the stage for the Allies' advance into mainland Europe.
