Saint Herman of Alaska was a Russian Orthodox monk who became the first Eastern Orthodox Saint in North America. Born in 1756 in Russia, he volunteered to travel to Alaska in 1794 to serve as a missionary among indigenous peoples. Known for his humility, compassion, and dedication, he helped establish spiritual communities and cared for both the native peoples and Russian settlers. He lived a simple, devout life until his death in 1837. Canonized in 1970, Saint Herman is venerated for his deep faith, humility, and significant role in evangelizing Alaska and fostering cultural understanding.
