Saint Anthony's Fire
Saint Anthony's Fire, also known as ergotism, is caused by consuming bread contaminated with ergot mold. The mold produces toxic compounds called ergot alkaloids, which can cause symptoms like severe vasoconstriction, leading to gangrene, hallucinations, seizures, and other neurological issues. Historically, outbreaks occurred when ergot-infected grains were used for baking. The condition was named after Saint Anthony’s Hospital, where victims were cared for. Today, ergotism is rare due to better grain processing, but it highlights the importance of food safety and monitoring mold growth in crops.
